The Tiny Gallery at the Ackland Museum Store is proud to present Susan Gartrell: Spirit Creatures. For Susan, a portrait is the intertwining of memory and emotion. The spirits she creates reveal stories from a deep relationship with life, painted through the lens of her imagination. They are intentionally painted small to create an intimacy that requires one to view them “up close,” in order to see their stories revealed.

Historian Donald J. Raleigh will consider the background to and course of Russia’s February Revolution of 1917, which ended 300 years of Romanov rule, and the October Revolution, which brought the Bolsheviks to power and gave rise to the world’s first socialist state.

Susan Rupp, Associate Professor of History at Wake Forest University, will discuss her paper on the experience of cholera in Russia during the first pandemic, with particular attention to the state’s interventionist measures, the response of medical personnel, and the outbreak of popular revolt.
